Bridalplasty: Everything that's wrong with America

Yesterday, I was channel surfing when I happened upon E!'s new series, Bridalplasty. As the name implies, brides are vying for various plastic surgery procedures and a chance at their dream wedding. Each girl has a wishlist of 8-10 procedures that she is hoping to have done to become "the perfect bride". Popular choices include liposuction of arms, breast augmentations, nose jobs, and laser skin resurfacing. They complete wedding-related challenges to win their procedures.

All of the brides are beautiful girls under the age of 35, who clearly have incredibly low self-esteem. Instead of building up these ladies self esteem the show knocks them down with demeaning and ridiculous challenges. It continually sends the message to these girls, and to all those schmucks that are watching, that you must look like a Barbie doll for a man to marry you. He doesn't care if you are a good human being. The contestants themselves have taken heed of this message and treat each other accordingly. One contestant, Alexandra of former Biggest Loser fame, threatened to literally cut another contestant. While yet another contestant, Jenessa, manipulates the other girls in an effort to win the grand prize herself. I can only imagine what their fiances would think.

Each week, in a display of vapid bitchiness, the girls vote one of the contestants off the show. As the dejected contestant leaves, the host calls out after her "Your wedding will go on, but it just won't be perfect."
